We are delighted to see that our well-respected ADBA Faculty member, Prof Yogi Kanagasingam and team have launched this first book ever in the world covering digital transformation in eye care delivery including user experiences from all 5 continents.

This is the third volume in a series, exploring the forefront of global telemedicine, telehealth, and remote diagnostics within the realm of eye care. Since the inception of our first publication in 2006 followed by the subsequent release in 2012, the intersection of technology and healthcare has undergone a remarkable evolution. Over the past decade, telecommunications and computing have experienced exponential growth, becoming efficient, cost-effective, and integral parts of our daily lives. The healthcare landscape, seizing the potential of cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, and the accelerated adoption of telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic, has undergone a profound transformation in service delivery. Notably, the field of eye care has embraced these technological advancements more enthusiastically than its medical counterparts, driving us to present this updated edition.

This inaugural book showcased nascent teleophthalmology initiatives globally and forward-thinking applications of remote technology for diagnoses and treatments. It unveiled remarkable achievements, from conducting remote eye exams to performing surgeries in remote and even extra-terrestrial locations. However, the core content centred on successful program models, technical standards, and practical considerations for integrating teleophthalmology into everyday practice. The second volume delved into well-established retinal screening programs, some of which reached millions of individuals. This edition expanded telehealth to encompass glaucoma and cardiovascular disease detection, introducing automated image analysis for diverse conditions. With teleophthalmology now an established practice, our second book aimed to guide readers in its implementation.

The fundamental purpose of this third edition remains unchanged. This book serves as a pragmatic guide, enriched with real-world instances, catering to those developing diverse programs. Once again, we are privileged to feature insights from leaders in this field, generously contributing their knowledge. The book is structured into three sections. The first delves into contemporary telemedicine programs, offering guidelines, best practices, ethical considerations, and diverse program examples. The second spotlights the swiftly evolving landscape of digital imaging and artificial intelligence for both autonomous and assisted diagnoses across various ocular and systemic conditions. The third section serves as a gallery, showcasing firmly established as well as emerging programs worldwide. This compilation of experiences vividly illustrates the diverse challenges and unexpected opportunities encountered by different organizations on this transformative journey.

There is little uncertainty that the realm of technology and healthcare will persist in evolving, especially in response to emerging environmental and resource-related challenges. Our aspiration is that this book can lay the groundwork for forthcoming initiatives by enhancing the collective comprehension of the ever-growing significance of remote and digital eye care.
